Gemstones and mineral specimens

Post by Philski » Sat May 10, 2014 11:20 pm

HI all
Cybran suggested an area for us talk about gemstone and mineral specimen. Its an awesome hobby and covers lapidary, jewellery, mineral specimen collecting and mineral identification.

If you would like any info on locations to hunt in Tasmania or identification of gemstones you have found this is a great place to ask. I have a full set of gemologist tools to help identify anything we get in tassie from diamonds to topaz, sapphire etc. And, about 20 years experience in gemology if that helps. More looking at trade stones to see if they are fake than anything. While its not gold, i did make $70000 the last 2 years out of mineral specimens and gemstones and under $200 for gold. Just as a comparison. gems and minerals rock

G'day folks,
I went to Doctor's Rocks on Wednesday to do some panning
& managed to get a few gold flakes & pinheads from the rock
crevices.
One crevice in particular was interesting due to the large amount
of pyrite fragments up to 15mm.There was also some black spinel
& three 3 - 4 mm red to orange zircons, both accessory minerals to
sapphire. Has anyone else found sapphires here?
I also found a 12mm piece of magnetite displaying a suggestion
of it's original octahedral crystal shape.
Cheers, Fox

Wow fox that's brilliant. In all the reading I have been doing I haven't seen anything to say sapphires have been found there. Nice find on the magnetite aswell.
