Hey guys! I'm very new to prospecting around. My fiance and I headed to the Weld for a night for a look around. Just looking for some insight in to what we may have found. Cheers in advanced guys and have a safe New Year!

The little one there is actually blue so I'm assuming a sapphire for that one.

Hey Rhonda,

Nice finds and nice nail polish.

From top to bottom:
1. Smokey quartz
2. Topaz (possibly facet grade ie can be faceted and set within a piece of jewelry, and quite a nice specimen by Weld River standards)
3. Blue sapphire (small one)
4. Smokey quartz (small, rounded one)
5. Smokey / clear quartz (large one)
6. Blue sapphire
7. Hard to tell, but pretty sure it's mica.

The sapphires come from basalt host rocks approx 47 million years old (but the sapphires themselves are much older), while the rest likely formed within granite approx 380 million years ago. The sapphires blew out of a small volcano-style vents, whereas the rest eroded out of rock that used to be underground. Two completely separate origins, but all ended up in the same river.

Thanks Explora and Philski. It was a great trip away and we both had a fantastic time. Beautiful landscape up and around that area. I guess the only drawback of the trip was the fact that we are both amateurs when it comes to fossicking around in the river beds so we probably made hard work for ourselves without knowing it.
But its such a rush to see that colour sitting in the sieve. We are heading back up there again next month and then probably closer to Easter once again.
Cheers for the feedback guys
