Your Best 2018 Finds

Post by junkhunter » Mon Dec 24, 2018 3:23 pm

Ok people , things are way too quiet here . We need to keep our forum alive but it seems many of us are reluctant to post . Maybe if we all put up our best finds , whether gold or relics , we can generate some traffic . I cannot help the forum with natural gold or gemstones but will start this ball rolling with some of my better finds . Meanwhile i hope everybody has a great Xmas / New Year , and stay safe all .

Wow! You've certainly killed it this year! I'm 3/4 of the way to WA to pick up some stuff to bring back to Tassie at the moment but if I manage to sneak in a bit of detecting hopefully I'll have something to show for it!

Ha ha. drove all the way to WA for 3 and a half pence in pretty average condition! Least I found some cool rocks from my childhood collection and picked up my boat. Will be happy to see some Tassie weather after crossing the nullarbor twice in 40 degree plus weather.

Nice old coins junkhunter. The last one is silver isn't it? Interesting what they used for money before Australia had it's own currency in 1910 a decade after federation.

My finds for 2018 were not very interesting. I found an 1861 penny that I wrecked by attempting to clean in lemon juice. That works for Aussie pennys but not old British ones. Teach me not to listen to my more intelligent other half :)

The US also did not have its own currency at first but used tokens, state coins and foreign currency.
I watched a detecting video from Vermont USA where the guy found a silver Spanish 8 real coin minted in Mexico City. Eventually he discovered it was a counterfeit coin made probably by Britain in an old war with Spain.

Yep silver Shillings Karl . 1861 penny is a good find , means you are in an older area and might hold more finds . It's a pity most bronze coins are corroded , cleaning with any acid removes the patina and leaves them that pink colour . I just scrub mine in soapy water with a brass brush that has very fine bristles and then coat with a wax preservative .
Finding a Spanish Reale would be unreal and i reckon a fake one of that origin would be worth more too .

Well, they might not be the best relics of 2018 but I reckon they are the hardest won. Drove 7000k in 2 weeks and endured locust plagues , duststorms , 46° days ,30 ° nights and thunderstorms to find them and a few hotrocks south of kalgoorlie. Must have driven past dozens of great relic and gold areas but no time to stop. Sure glad to be back in Tassie!

You sure picked some hot weather to be traveling and detecting ! I like those buttons from Adelaide . While i have many Tassie ones and some from Ballarat , London etc none have showed up from Adelaide yet . The piece top right may well be a large corset hook .
