Mathinna and South Esk River

Postby alwayslookin » Sat Dec 20, 2014 9:49 am

Was wondering if anyone has had much luck or experience detecting and panning around Mathinna or in the South Esk River? The river runs through quite a bit of gold country and should have some in it. Old Twelvetrees says there is but was scattered because the valley is so broad and flat.

hi alwayslookin, I haven't tried around Mathinna, but have test panned a number of spots along the South Esk.
Given that the river drains a number of goldfields, it stands to reason that there has to be some in it....just where?
I have tried at Conara, Perth, Evandale and Hadspen, so roughly a 1/3 from the source, to 3/4 to its end at the Tamar.
Every site produce some colour, albeit small specks. Curiously, the better flakes came from Hadspen end.
It would pay to scan Google Earth and topo maps for the best trap sites and then test those.
good luck,
cheers,
