Worlds first metal detector

This is an amazing 25th June 1881 draft of Alexander Graham Bells metal detector design. A few days after this drawing was made, it was used to try and find the bullet lodged in then US president James A. Garfield. After the "successful" assassination attempt on the 2nd July 1881.
its historically important as it was drawn prior to the assassination attempt, so the machine could not have been produced specifically for the task at hand, as is commonly presumed. Before the event even occurred! But hurried into production to save the presidents life.

it did not find the bullet and was diagnosed as a malfunction or misconfiguration on the machines part. It was later fixed and worked as intended.
